As we come to the end of the year what better time to feature a band that closed out 2018 with one hell of a statement. Boston powerhouse, Unearth, released one their strongest efforts to date in the form of Extinction(S). The collective efforts of Trevor Phipps (vocals), guitarists Ken Susi and Buz McGrath, Nick Pierce (drums) and Chris O’Toole (bass), pack 10 explosive songs onto the record that show that this 20 year outfit is stronger and hungrier than ever. The first single “Incinerate” is familiar, yet one of the most crushing songs the band has released. My favorite is “Sidewinder” as it is just heavy, aggressive and bludgeoning. “King of the Arctic” comes in a close second with its slower groove and thunderous drums.
Last month the band embarked on a short tour just prior to the release of the new record and I was able to sit down with Trevor Phipps and get some insight on Extinction(S), the 20 year career and how he balances time on the road with family life. Being a fan of the band since first seeing them in 2004 on Ozzfest, this was certainly a favorite moment of 2018.
