As summer begins to heat up the concert scene follows suit as these next few months will be jammed packed with musical goodness. And while there are a few lineups that boast some heaviness, they fail to compare to Morbid Angel’s 2017 U.S Tour which features bands like Revocation, Withered and extreme death metal stalwarts Suffocation. This tour coincides with the release of Suffocation’s bombastic new album …Of the Dark Light.
As expected the new record is a powerful, ferocious offering that continues to see the Long Island band push the limits of speed and brutality. Vocalist Frank Mullen, guitarists Terrance Hobbs & Charlie Errigo, bassist Derek Boyer, drummer Eric Morotti and contributions from touring vocalist Kevin Muller show just why this band is so reveled in the metal community. Since re-forming in 2003 Suffocation have churned out 5 albums with …Of the Dark Light showing the band only getting stronger…and more brutal. Is that even possible?
One listen and there is no denying the power and sheer weight of this album. The opening track “Clarity Through Deprivation” comes at you like a runaway freight train barreling down the tracks. Spiraling riffs, drums that go from rapid fire to a controlled chaos and the unmistakable growl of Mullen spewing his venom at the world. “The Warmth Within the Dark” is a fierce track full of chugging riffs and thunderous drums. The blistering “Return to the Abyss” grabs you by the throat and pulls you into the depths. There is nowhere to catch your breath during the 35-minute onslaught on your senses. But that should come as no surprise.
